WAVE: An automated tool for web accessibility evaluation and education

Par George Joeckel, Web Accessibility Specialist (Lien du site Web de l'entreprise WebAIM)

En détail

The second version of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0) are used as defacto standards by governments and organizations worldwide. Quebec's Standard Sur L' Accessibilité d' un Site Web (SGQRI 008-01) references WCAG 2.0 as an "international standard", and includes 80 references to WCAG 2.0. Participants in this workshop will explore WAVE: a free-to-use web application for evaluating web pages.

The WAVE tool is provided by WebAIM at Utah State University. WAVE identifies the strengths and weaknesses of a web page's markup (HTML, CSS, ARIA and JS) through an automated process. WAVE reports are structured to help users:

  • Identify page elements that may not be WCAG 2.0-compliant
  • Review the WCAG 2.0 Success Criteria relevant to an identified page element
  • Understand what is needed for WCAG 2.0 compliance

In this workshop, participants will:

  • Receive an overview of WAVE
  • Observe a webpage evaluation
  • Conduct a webpage evaluation (BYOD)
